November 2019: 1st Phase Closing & 2nd Phase Kick-off Meeting held in Beijing

On 4th November 2019 Prof. Stephan Koester with his team from Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Waste Management (ISAH) of Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) payed a visit to the School of Environment (SoE) of Tsinghua University (THU) in order to have a strategic meeting with Prof. Jian’e Zuo and his scientific staff. Since 2017 PLUS stands for a considerable expansion of the cooperation between LUH and Tsinghua in research and teaching on Urban Water Management. Now we look back on a very successful first 2 years.

Highlights of the cooperation: The “Hannover Day” and Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between LUH and THU were held at THU in Beijing in October 2018. Half year later the delegation of THU has visited LUH in Germany and the “Tsinghua Day” was held on campus of LUH in May 2019. Those two activities have built solid foundation for the further cooperation between the two universities.

Joint research: Among many other joint research activities Prof. Koester and Prof. Zuo have successfully set up the joint research project of Sponge City development (KEYS) between LUH and THU to contribute to the Mega Water Project in Tongzhou (Beijing). All German and Chinese scientists and partners are involved and collaborate closely in order to apply German innovative technologies to the implementation of demonstrations in Tongzhou. Another remarkable achievement is the joint publication between the two professors. At the beginning of 2019 the book “Urban Water Management for Future Cities: Technical and Institutional Aspects from Chinese and German Perspective” have been jointly published by Prof. Koester and Prof. Zuo.

Academic Achievements: PHD Exchange and furthermore, already 8 students from LUH have benefited from attending the yearly Tsinghua International Summer School Environment since 2017.

Both teams are very confident in the future development of the joint platform PLUS. Concrete steps for the future have been shaped during the meeting for achieving the ambitious academic and scientific goals. Another component will be strengthened: PLUS-UP targeting Sino-German Start-ups. Along with all other activities, the launch of the Dual Master Program in Environmental Engineering between Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science of LUH and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School will be the main focus of both universities. We will continue to commit ourselves to more Sino-German projects in Urban Water Management and are looking forward to a further successful collaboration with our partners.

July 2019: Sino-German Symposium on Microplastics held in Beijing

On 9 and 10 July 2019, numerous German and Chinese microplastic experts as well as many other guests took part in the Sino-German "Symposium on Occurrence and Fate of Microplatics in Urban Spaces" in Beijing. The aim of the symposium was to present the current state of knowledge on the occurrence, whereabouts and effects of microplastics in urban space and to highlight gaps in knowledge and future challenges. We thank all speakers and participants for their contributions to the success of our event. We also would like to thank the School of Environment of Tsinghua University for organizing the event and the Sino-German Centre for the Research Promotion (CDZ) for enabling and supporting our symposium.

May 2019: Tsinghua Day @ Leibniz University Hannover - A further milestone to strengthen the cooperation

On 7 May 2019, Professor Volker Epping - President of Leibniz University Hannover - and Professor Christina von Haaren - Vice-President for International Affairs - received high-ranking representatives of Tsinghua University from Beijing. The delegation from China was led by Professor Bin Yang, Vice President of the Chinese Elite Institution. The reason for the visit of the 25-member delegation from China was the "Tsinghua Day", which was organized by the PLUS-Team of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of Leibniz University. Previously, the School of Environment of Tsinghua University had organized the "Hannover Day" on October 30, 2018, at which a Memorandum of Understanding on future cooperation was signed. The Tsinghua Day, which took place in the University’s “Welfen Castle” in perfect weather, was the result of an invitation by Professor Epping, which he issued at Hannover Day in Beijing in October 2018.
The event not only served to discuss common future and environmental issues, but also offered plenty of opportunity to further develop relations with Tsinghua University and especially with the School of Environment. Professor Steffen Marx - Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy - and Professor Kebin He - Dean of the School of Environment - as well as many Chinese guests and members of Leibniz University were very involved in making the day a success. Among other things, it was decided that, in addition to the already very well-functioning research cooperation, academic exchange and cooperation in student education should be further intensified. Thus the work on the development of a "Double Master Degree" in the field of environmental engineering will start immediately. The Chinese delegation was particularly pleased that on 8 May the Tsinghua Day found a technical expansion in the new town hall of the state capital of Hanover. This session became a special experience due to the fact that the chairman of the council and mayor Thomas Hermann gave a very friendly welcome speech.

March 2019: Ongoing Preparation of Tsinghua Day @ LUH

Professor Jiane ZUO was guest at Leibniz University Hannover from 5 to 8 March 2019 to prepare our next PLUS-milestone, the "Tsinghua Day @ Leibniz University Hannover". This event will take place on 7 and 8 May 2019 in Hannover. We expect about 25 Chinese guests and especially the Vice-President Prof. Yang from Tsinghua University. The Tsinghua Day serves to further advance the cooperation initiated by PLUS, especially on faculty level but also on presidium level. On the picture you can see (from the left): Ms Ting FENG (Scientific Secretary in charge of the PLUS Project), Ms Yin WANG (Int. Office of Leibniz University Hannover), Prof. Jiane ZUO (School of Environment of Tsinghua University) and Prof. Stephan KOESTER (Leibniz University Hannover - Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Waste Management).

The Hannover Day was a great success

The MoU was signed, the scientific exchange deepened and a return visit to Hanover was scheduled.
